From Plymouth station, walk five minutes south to Tavistock Place — this striking 2020 cultural complex stitches three Victorian buildings together beneath a vast black box that hovers above the piazza on bare steel legs. Even without going inside, the fourteen colossal ship figureheads suspended in the glass atrium are visible from the street — vast carved guardians from the age of empire, drifting silent overhead. Start here while the early eastern sun catches the limestone and the piazza is empty of school groups.

Tip: Stand at the southwest corner of the piazza by the steps to St Luke's — the figureheads line up perfectly against the black underside of the cantilever from that exact angle. Arrive before 10:00 to dodge the school tours and catch the raking light on the heritage stonework; after 10:30 the facade goes flat.
